What Happens When You Get a Dental Implant?
A dental implant placement is usually one (sometimes two) surgical procedure(s) in which a surgeon places a titanium implant into the jaw. A crown is then created and attached. As it heals, bone will grow around the implant to encase it.
What Exactly Does Recovery Entail?
As we mentioned, while you heal from implant surgery, bone will grow around the implant to encase it. On average, the complete healing process for this takes about four to six months.
This may leave you with more questions; will I be comfortable? What do I need to do to take care of myself during this time? We’ll answer those questions and more below.
Recovery time will differ from individual to individual. It will also depend on the type of surgery and number of implants you receive.
Will I Be Comfortable?
Many patients return to work a day after the procedure and in some cases, the same day.
In general, once you leave our office, you may experience mild bleeding from around the implant area. This is normal and typically clears within a few hours. There may be some pain along with swelling and drainage. This is also normal and should clear up within 2 to 3 days. Your jaw muscles may feel a bit stiff, and your tongue and throat may also be slightly sore. Some patients also report a dry mouth. Many of these symptoms subside within a week.
You may need us to prescribe a prescription pain medication. However, often an over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen are adequate for alleviating discomfort.
Post Implant Recovery Tips
Go easy.
Rest is best. Take the rest of the day off. If you were given a sedative, you shouldn’t drive a vehicle and you may feel drowsy. When you lay down, elevate your head a little more with extra pillows.
Follow all home care instructions that we give you.
You may need to avoid brushing the area, and using a saltwater rinse to clean your mouth.
Use ice and heat.
Ice is great for pain relief. This is especially so if you have any swelling. Ice reduces inflammation and can assist in blocking pain signals from nerves.
Be mindful when eating.
You will want to do your best to protect the healing wounds in your mouth. We do not advise drinking carbonated beverages, alcohol, or drinking from a straw. Hard and acidic foods should also be avoided. Hard foods can cause damage to a newly implanted tooth or the surrounding tissue. Acidic foods may also irritate sensitive tissue causing pain and inflammation. Soft, cool foods are highly recommended. Some good examples are applesauce and yogurt. Lukewarm soup and oatmeal are also good options.
