What does a periodontist do?
You’ve likely heard the term periodontist before. You probably know that a periodontist works in the dental field. But, unless you are related to one, you work in the dental industry, or you have been treated by one before, you’re probably unfamiliar with just what it is exactly that they do.A periodontist is a dental specialist who performs procedures specific to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease. (By the way, did you know that gum disease is the #1 reason adults lose teeth?) While a general dentist treats teeth, gums, and other areas of the mouth, a periodontist’s focus is the treatment of the gums and the bone supporting the teeth. Additionally, a periodontist specializes in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are trained extensively in these areas, including an additional 3 years of schooling beyond their basic dental education.
When should I visit a periodontist?General dentists sometimes treat periodontal cases or perform implant procedures if they are not too severe. However, many will refer their patients to a periodontist if the case is more challenging. If your dentist refers you to a periodontist, worry not, you are in good hands!
Periodontists also provide a variety of other specialized services such as cleaning a tooth’s root or removing damaged root tissue. Additionally, many periodontists provide cosmetic periodontal procedures. You may want to consider seeing a periodontist if:
- You have worsening gum disease
- You’re at a risk for tooth loss
- You need a tooth extraction
- You need bone or tissue repair
- You are unhappy with the way your smile feels or looks
