My daughter just turned 21 and now needs to get her wisdom teeth extracted. I am terrified of general anesthesia. Is it possible this can be done with dental sedation? I don’t want her in pain, but I do want to do what is safest for her.

Dear Edith,
Bear in mind that I have not examined your daughter’s case, but in the overwhelming majority of cases patients your daughter’s age have absolutely no problems with wisdom teeth extractions. This is because at her age the cementum has not had time to really settle in and accumulate at the roots of her teeth yet, which means they are still quite pliable. Oral conscious sedation should be sufficient in her situation.
I don’t know if you’re familiar with this type of sedation or not, but she will need a ride to and from the dentist the day of the procedure as well as someone to stay with her for a few hours after she gets home. This is to ensure she is lucid and steady on her feet before she is left on her own.
If you have a dentist telling you that she needs general anesthesia without there being any extenuating circumstances that you haven’t mentioned, then I really recommend you get a second opinion before moving forward.
